Hardest 10. Diamond he selection of abrasive media for blast cleaning steel is based primarily on two broad objectives, quality and economics. Quality is defined in terms of appearance after cleaning (SSPC-SP 7, 6, 10, and 5 ) , profile depth and contour, and chemical cleanliness. The economics of an abrasive is determined by its initial cost and by the production rate that can be achieved when it is used. This article reviews the properties of abrasive that affect quality and productivity of surface preparation by abrasive blasting. Also described is a test program including laboratory evaluation of abrasive properties and blasting trials with various silica and slag abrasives.
